unda dml loudspeaker (2023)

DML’s (or distributed mode loudspeakers) attach a magnet motor directly onto an ultra-light panel substrate instead of a conventional cone, vibrating it to produce sound . With such a radical increase in effective cone area, they produce an unusually diffuse sound field, often described as extending beyond the boundaries of the room. Having built a few of my own back in college, I was always struck by how enveloping the sound-stage was from a pair of seemingly innocuous planes of treated polymer foam. The unda DML is my take on a commercialized design, to be either mounted in-wall or placed freestanding, the canvas panel used as a customizable graphic display.
